St. Cuthbert Church History

The Diocese of Texas founded St. Cuthbert in 1978 and established it as a mission in 1979. A small group of 25 first held services at Bob and Linda’s Sandwich Shop on Hwy. 6 led by The Rev. Jeremiah Ward. By 1981, the congregation moved to their own A-frame building and The Rev. Tom Brindley became the new Vicar. Steady and continuous growth brought about the construction of a new building on Willow River Drive in Copperfield and by 1992 St Cuthbert had attained its independent parish status. The Rev. Tom Brindley remained the Rector until 1994.

The Rev. Dr. Steve Sellers accepted the call to serve from 1994-1999 and was followed by The Rev. Desmond Goonesekera.

Our congregation continued to grow and prosper during this time and it became apparent that our facility on Willow River would no longer meet our needs. In February of 2007, land was purchased and ground was broken that same year for the construction of our present building. It was dedicated and consecrated on August 23, 2009.

Fr. Desmond retired in 2013 and was succeeded by The Rev. Bruce Bonner who served as rector from 2014 until his retirement in 2022.

St. Cuthbert Church is blessed at this time to have The Rev. Dr. Malcolm Ellis as our Interim Rector.

We are excited about the future and feel our present location is an ideal setting to continue to fulfill our mission of building the kingdom of God together.
